Prehistory
- Mar 3, 1986The prophecy is pressed. P.E.P.E. releases "Shadilay" on the Magic Sound label, a frog with a magic wand on the disc. Nobody notices for thirty years.
- ~1998–2003Kekeke. Korean StarCraft players romanize their laughter on Battle.net; "kekeke" becomes the sound of the Zergling rush.
- Nov 23, 2004Kek is born in translation. World of Warcraft's Orcish cipher renders "lol" as "kek" across the faction divide.
- Mar 22, 2005First definition. Urban Dictionary: kek — "'lol' in Orcish."
- 2005Pepe drawn. Matt Furie's Boy's Club debuts a frog who feels good, man.
- ~2008Pepe reaches 4chan and mutates into the emotional alphabet of the boards: Feels Good, Sad Frog, Smug, Angry.
- May 13, 2013Top kek. The Turkish snack-cake thread on /s4s/; "kek" completes its conquest of 4chan dialect.
- 2014–2015Rare Pepes. Watermarked frogs traded as fake collectibles; an eBay lot reaches $99,166 before removal. "Meme magic" enters the /pol/ vocabulary.
Revelation & Rise
- Oct 13, 2015Trump tweets the frog. The candidate's account posts Trump-as-Pepe; /pol/ reads it as an anointing.
- Nov 27, 2015The Revelation of /his/. 4chan discovers Kek: Egyptian frog-headed god of the primordial darkness, "raiser up of the light."
- Dec 2015First flag. A "kekistan.jpg" circulates on /int/.
- Jun 19, 2016The Octo-Sevens. "Trump will win" lands post No. 77777777. Scripture.
- Sep 2016The dense month. Clinton campaign condemns Pepe (Sep 12); Shadilay is unearthed (Sep 13); the first Rare Pepe card is minted on Counterparty (Sep 9); the ADL lists Pepe as a hate symbol (late Sep).
- Nov 8, 2016The election. The boards declare meme magic empirically confirmed.
- Dec 14, 2016The island thread. /pol/ schemes to buy a Caribbean island named Kekistan. No island is bought; a nation is named.
The Republic
- Jan 30, 2017The Founding Tweet. Sargon of Akkad proposes "shitposter" as a census ethnicity; his followers choose the name Kekistani. #FreeKekistan trends.
- Feb 1, 2017The institutions assemble: @RepublicOfKek passes 5,000 followers, kekistan.com posts its manifesto, /r/kekistan organizes under "There is only one God (Kek) and Pepe is his prophet."
- Mar 10, 2017The flag of Greeneville. 4chan finds "He Will Not Divide Us" by contrails and star charts. "Flag captured. Praise Kek."
- Apr 15, 2017Berkeley. The green banner debuts at a violent street rally; the SPLC notes its Third Reich template.
- May 2017Peak Kekistan. SPLC publishes "What the Kek" (May 9) and amplifies what it exposes; Big Man Tyrone seizes power and launches the state T-shirt; Furie draws Pepe's funeral.
- Aug 11–12, 2017Charlottesville. The flag marches beside swastikas at Unite the Right; Heather Heyer is murdered. The deniability dies on national television.
- Aug 19, 2017Boston. The flags reappear — and the press now identifies them on sight.
- Sep 12, 2017Destiny 2 scrubs Kekistan-resembling armor as "sharing elements with a hate symbol."
Fall & Afterlife
- Jan 2018The Spencer debate. Sargon's loss to the white nationalist damages the satirists' standing; "Kekistan is dead" videos become a genre. HOMERPEPE sells for ~$38,500 at Rare AF (Jan 13).
- Jul 2018Congress notices the merch. Rep. Keith Ellison challenges Amazon over Kekistan gear.
- Apr 1, 2019The President resigns — on April Fools' Day, ambiguity fully intended.
- 2019Hong Kong reclaims the frog. Pepe becomes a pro-democracy symbol, innocent of the American culture war.
- Jan 6, 2021The last march. A Kekistan flag is carried into the Capitol riot and into every symbol-decoder that follows.
- Mar–Oct 2021The vindication of the ledger. HOMERPEPE resells for ~$320,000; a genesis RAREPEPE fetches ~$500,000; PEPENOPOULOS hammers at $3.65M at Sotheby's; Furie completes the Rare Pepe Directory; Fake Rares schism begins.
- Apr 14, 2023$PEPE launches — 420.69 trillion tokens, no presale, "the dogs have had their day."
- Dec 9, 2024$PEPE tops $11 billion, briefly entering the top twenty crypto assets.
- Dec 31, 2024Kekius Maximus. Elon Musk takes the god's name; a token detonates into nine figures and crashes within a day; the persona (and frenzy) returns in mid-May 2025.
